Before letting your son pick up that razor, AII, manufacturer of Clubman-Pinaud, a nearly 200-year old quintessential line of toiletries and grooming products for men, has a few tips and tricks to help him master the art of shaving.
GETTING STARTED:
1. I's important to start clean. Use soap and water (preferably a moisturizing one, so you don't dry out skin) to remove oil and debris for a smoother shave.
2. Get steamed. Steam and warm water are a great way to saturate the hair and open pores. (Note: Hot water dries out skin and damages pores!) Hair is softest at the end of a shower, so shampoo and soap up before shaving (and don't forget the non-fogging mirror).
3. Apply a thick layer of shaving cream or gel to the face and neck and leave on for at least three minutes. This will not only reduce the friction caused by the blade running over the skin's surface, but also will help soften the hair.
4. Begin running the razor down your face, starting with the cheeks and moving down the neck. Leave hard to shave areas like the chin and upper lip until the end. This gives the shaving gel/cream more time to soften hair in these areas.
5. Pull skin taut with your free hand while shaving. This smoothes out the skin's surface and reduces the chance of nicks or cuts. In the event of a nick or cut, the Clubman Styptic Pencil stops bleeding fast by the sealing the skins surface, preventing the penetration of infection-causing germs.
6. After shaving, apply a lotion or balm to calm irritation and razor burn. Clubman After Shave Lotion soothes, conditions, protects and moisturizes newly-shaven skin.
7. Not quite ready for the blade? Electric razors are a great option. Before using, apply talc to the face and neck area to absorb any oils from the skin's surface. Clubman Shave Talc is micro-pulverized, making it extra smooth and soothing. It also helps to conceal nicks and blemishes.
TIPS AND TRICKS:
1. Use a loofah or mild facial scrub once or twice a week to remove dead skin cells and prevent ingrown hairs.
2. To decrease chances of nicks and cuts, avoid shaving horizontally. In the event you do cut yourself, put a small piece of tissue on the area and leave on for 5-10 minutes. Don't pull off. Instead, use warm water to loosen the tissue. Otherwise, you'll reopen the cut. Or try Clubman Nick Relief, a no-sting formula containing herbal extracts to soothe irritation and speed up the healing process.
3. Those prone to ingrown hairs or those with sensitive skin should shave in the direction of hair growth. A single blade razor or one designed for sensitive skin may also help.
4. Be sure to replace blade or disposable razor every two or three shaves. An old blade can be irritating and cause damage to the top layers of the skin, particularly young skin.
5. Never wipe razor off with a washcloth or tissue after shaving. Instead, rinse off with water and let it air dry.
